My son is a first grader, and he loves to draw. Today he is drawing robots (he tends to stick to themes). Being an appreciative mom, I took this picture of one I especially liked, which he titled Halloween Robot Monster.

About 15 minutes later he came running back into the room with the drawing, which had some additions. He said, “I decided it needed a scene, and some scanners.” And I, his writing teacher mother, thought, “He’s revising!”

Thanks to my great friend Jessica Piper, writing teacher turned preschool entrepreneur, I had just read a great blog post about Readers and Writer Workshop in preschool, without which I might never have had this thought.
Creating readers and writers early matters. Learning that it’s ok to make revision while still young will pay off later.

Laura,
Don’t you just live it when your 6 year old can teach you about your middle school students?!
Good job to your artist!

My kids are my best teachers, because they teach by doing not lecturing. I think that’s why it’s so easy to learn from kids.

Laura–I love this blog entry! And . . . your son’s picture is amazing. I have been thinking a lot about writing in K-1 and doing some reading, so thanks for what is for me a very timely entry.
